Siemens Gamesa intends to build the “most powerful” turbine
Siemens Gamesa will install and test what the European Union has named “the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine prototype” at the østerild test facility in Denmark before putting it into full-scale manufacturing.
The manufacturer did not confirm the new turbine’s rating, although it would almost probably need to be larger than Vestas’ 15MW model to lay claim to being the most powerful.
The prototype’s testing is being funded by a 30 million euro grant from the European Union’s Innovation Fund. According to EU papers, the date of introduction into service is December 31, 2024.
Siemens Gamesa’s spokesman stated that the company would only determine whether to install a new product in a commercial project “after careful testing.”
He added: “We fundamentally believe in the offshore market and the expansion of capacities at sea must be implemented quickly and consistently to reach the ambitious climate targets. With our current 14 MW offshore turbine we are well positioned to support here.”
